The Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hosts a Side Event on the Theme of Climate Change in the Margins of the International Law Week of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

On October 26, 2023, the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) co-hosted a side event on the theme of "International Law in Global Climate Governance: Implementation and Outlook" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. United Nations Legal Counsel and Under-Secretary-General Miguel de Serpa Soares, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ma Xinmin, and Secretary-General of the AALCO Dr. Kamalinne Pinitpuvadol attended and addressed the opening ceremony. More than 60 representatives from various countries attended the event, and keynote speeches were made by legal officials from Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Iran, Brazil, Singapore, and Vanuatu as well as members of the International Law Commission. All parties stressed the important role of international law in tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development, and called for upholding multilateralism, strengthening solidarity and cooperation, and jointly working for the positive results of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai.

This is the first time that China has hosted a side event on the theme of international climate change law at the United Nations, which has been highly appreciated by all parties. Relevant discussions have played a positive role in building consensus among all parties and promoting the multilateral process on climate.
