Wang Yi: China and Germany Should Jointly Provide Positive Energy for and Inject Stability into the World

2018/05/31

On May 31, 2018 local time, when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany in Berlin, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed that the current international landscape is undergoing unprecedented and profound changes, with hotspot and difficult issues emerging one after another as well as unilateralism and protectionism on the rise. As responsible countries and all-round strategic partners, China and Germany should jointly provide positive energy for and inject stability into the world.

Wang Yi said that the new governments of both China and Germany were formed this March. Both sides should conduct communication and discussion in various fields as soon as possible. Especially in the face of an uncertain international situation, both sides need more than ever to strengthen coordination, enhance mutual trust, and jointly tackle various global challenges. To this end, the two sides will give play to the guiding and driving effects of high-level exchanges and institutional dialogues. Not long ago, Chancellor Angela Merkel paid a very successful visit to China, which embodies the high level of China-Germany relations. The two countries will also hold the fifth round of inter-governmental consultation in Berlin this July, which will endow bilateral cooperation with new connotations.

Both sides will continue to uphold the spirit of openness and cooperation, and jointly support the sound and stable development of two-way investment. The new round of opening up of the Chinese market will provide broader development space and opportunities for the operation of German enterprises in China. The Chinese side also hopes that the German side will objectively and positively view the Chinese enterprises' investment in Germany, and create a fair and friendly environment as well as a stable framework of legal system.

China appreciates Germany's open attitude towards the "Belt and Road" initiative and welcomes Germany to actively participate in the "Belt and Road" construction through cooperation in specific projects. We will continue to uphold the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits to actively build platforms for the enterprises of both countries to carry out trilateral cooperation, thus jointly making the opportunity, the market and the cake bigger.

Wang Yi said that China has always viewed and developed its relations with the European Union (EU) from a strategic height and long-term perspective, and firmly supported the integration path independently chosen by Europe. China is glad to see that relevant reforms have made positive progress, and hopes that the EU will maintain unity, stability, openness and prosperity, as well as play an important and active role on the international arena as a polar of the world. China and Germany will continue to be impellers for the development of China-Europe relations. As major economies in the world and vindicators of the existing international order, China and Germany will also jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade, continue to intensify bilateral cooperation under the G20 framework, and play a constructive role in promoting world peace and regional stability.

Wang Yi stressed that China and Germany enjoy extensive common interests, and bilateral cooperation has no longer just been restricted to economy and trade for a long time. The strategic connotations of China-Germany relations have also transcended bilateral scope for a long time. China is willing to make joint efforts with Germany to uphold the spirit of equality, mutual respect, mutual benefit and win-win results, and push forward bilateral all-round strategic cooperation in an in-depth manner, so as to better benefit the two countries and the world.
