On October 21, 2023, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun met with Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Ahmed Aboul Gheit on the sidelines of the Cairo Summit for Peace on the Palestinian Question, and had an exchange of views on the current Palestine-Israel situation.

Zhai Jun said that China is saddened by many civilian casualties caused by the Palestine-Israel conflict and the sharp deterioration of the humanitarian situation, and calls for an early ceasefire and end of war, and efforts to carry out humanitarian rescue and assistance to avoid happening a humanitarian disaster. China believes that military power is not a solution to the question, and combating violence with violence will only lead to a vicious tit-for-tat circle and create obstacles to the political settlement of the Palestinian question. The root cause of the Palestinian question lies in the long delay in realizing the dream of an independent State of Palestine. Resuming talks for peace on the basis of the two-state solution is the only way out to break the vicious circle of the Palestine-Israel conflict. China and the LAS share similar positions on the Palestinian question, and China firmly supports the LAS in playing an important role in this question, and supports relevant Arab states in carrying out mediation to promote the early deescalation of the situation.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that Gaza is currently faced with a dangerous situation and a serious disaster. The pressing task is to urge Palestine and Israel to cease fire and stop fighting, and provide humanitarian rescue and assistance for the people in Gaza as soon as possible. The international community has the responsibility to take actions to resume talks for peace at an early date and promote a political settlement of the Palestinian question. The LAS highly appreciates China's objective and just position on the Palestinian question, and stands ready to maintain close communication with China to make concerted efforts to end the conflict between Palestine and Israel and restart the Middle East peace process.
