Wang Yi: Settlement of Reasonable Security Concern Is Important Key to Realizing Denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula

On August 3, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu of Turkey jointly met the press in Beijing after co-chairing the China-Turkey Foreign Ministers' Consultation.

A journalist raised a question that how Wang Yi views the recent remarks made by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Wang Yi expressed that China's stance on the Peninsula nuclear issue has maintained consistency and stability. The country has always followed the "Three Persistence", which are sticking to realizing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, adhering to maintaining peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and insisting on settling issues through dialogues and negotiations. Regarding to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s recent violations of the UN Security Council resolution by trial launching a ballistic missile, China has clarified its opposition stance. At the same time, China also calls for all parties to take no more actions that may lead to tension or escalation of the situation.

Wang Yi expressed that the Chinese side attaches importance to speeches delivered by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on the Korean Peninsula and China-US relations. Reiterating the "Four Nos" principles of the US toward the DPRK, Wang Yi said that China hopes the US to implement the "Four Nos" principles with specific policies toward the DPRK. China has also noticed that the US side pays more attention to security issues centering on the peninsula in recent time. China always regards the security issue as the core of the Peninsula issue. China hopes all parties to meet in the halfway and figure out a fundamental plan for addressing respective security concern through equal dialogue as soon as possible, which is the most important key to opening the crux of the Korean Peninsula issue, so as to eventually achieve the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Wang Yi stressed that China has consistently, comprehensively and strictly implemented all the UN Security Council resolutions concerning the DPRK. As to the latest development of the Peninsula situation, the UN Security Council is conducting consultation on it. China will continuously follow the objective and fair stance to participate in the process with the spirit of mutual respect.
