Assistant Foreign Minister Qian Hongshan Attends and Addresses Reception Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of ASEM

On the evening of May 9, 2016, the reception celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Asia-Europe meeting (ASEM) was held in Guangzhou. Assistant Foreign Minister Qian Hongshan, Executive Director of Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Zhang Yan and Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou Ouyang Weimin attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Nearly 200 people, including representatives from relevant national governments, media, think-tanks, as well as the industrial and commercial circles who were in Guangzhou to attend the ASEM Media Dialogue on Connectivity, also attended the reception at invitation.

Qian Hongshan expressed in his speech that 20 years ago, the ASEM established a common goal to build a new comprehensive partnership between Asia and Europe, opening a new voyage of all-round dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe. Over the past two decades, the ASEM has enhanced mutual understanding and trust between Asia and Europe, expanded Asia-Europe economic and trade contacts as well as cooperation, demonstrated the effectiveness of multilateralism and deepened friendship and sentiments between the two peoples. Looking forward to the future, the ASEM should increase input, and benefit people of all countries with practical cooperation. At present, the ASEM should especially make efforts to restart the process of economic and trade cooperation, and push for visible results from connectivity cooperation.

Qian Hongshan expressed that China is a firm supporter and participant of Asia-Europe cooperation, and will continue to strengthen cooperation with all sides in Asia and Europe when seeking its own development, so as to make joint efforts for the stability and prosperity of Asia, Europe and even the world. China is willing to join hands and cooperate with other parties in Asia and Europe, seize opportunities, promote the 11th ASEM Summit of Heads of State and Government this July a success, and make contributions to a greater development of the ASEM in the next decade.
