Assistant Foreign Minister Qian Hongshan Attends the First IORA Leaders' Summit

On March 7, 2017, the first Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Leaders’ Summit was held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Assistant Foreign Minister Qian Hongshan led the Chinese delegation to attend the summit, and delivered a speech.

Qian Hongshan expressed that since its establishment 20 years ago, the IORA has played a positive role in promoting regional development and cooperation. The convening of the summit marks that the IORA has stepped onto a new historical point, to which China would like to offer its congratulation. For a long time, China has conducted fruitful and friendly cooperation with the IORA as a dialogue partner. The Chinese side welcomes the IORA and its member states to actively participate in or align the “Belt and Road” construction and advance advantage complementarity, so as to achieve common development.

During the attendance, Qian Hongshan also met with IORA Secretary-General K. V. Bhagirath and Director General for Asia-pacific and African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Desra Percaya of Indonesia respectively. Speaking highly of China’s important support to the development of the IORA, all parties welcome China to continue to play a positive role in Indian Ocean rim affairs.
