Wang Yi Meets with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of Thailand

On March 30, 2018local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of Thailand on the sidelines of his attendance at the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Wang Yi conveyed Premier Li Keqiang’s greetings to Prayut Chan-o-cha, and expressed that in recent years, Thailand has maintained social stability and economic development, and played a crucial role in international and regional affairs. The new Chinese government will continue to place Thailand in the privileged direction of China’s neighboring diplomacy, inherit the fine tradition that China and Thailand are as close as one family and open a new realm for China-Thailand friendly cooperation. China is willing to, together with Thailand, maintain high-level exchanges, accelerate the construction of the China-Thailand railway, strengthen tourism and local cooperation, and actively discuss conducting trilateral cooperation in the construction of the “Eastern Economic Corridor” of Thailand at the same time. The Thai side will assume the rotating presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) next year and China is willing to fully support the work of Thailand and elevate China-Thailand relations and China-ASEAN relations to new stages.

Prayut Chan-o-cha congratulated China on its successful convening of the Two Sessions and the election of new leaders of the state organs. Prayut Chan-o-cha stated that Thailand-China relations are in the best period, in which the two countries have made remarkable achievements from cooperation in such areas as economy, trade and tourism. The China-Thailand railway has been actively advanced and Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest in the construction of the “Eastern Economic Corridor” of Thailand. The Thai side supports China in conducting trilateral cooperation in the country. Thailand will assume the rotating presidency of the ASEAN next year and will also host a series of important international and regional conferences in the next few years. He hoped and believed that Thailand will continue to receive support from China, thus jointly making new contributions to ASEAN-China cooperation.
