Yang Jiechi Meets with President Moon Jae-in of the ROK

On March 30, 2018 local time, President Xi Jinping's Special Representative, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi met with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul.

Yang Jiechi conveyed the warm greetings from President Xi Jinping to Moon Jae-in, and expressed that President Xi Jinping sent me as Special Representative to visit the ROK, aiming to promote the implementation of the consensus between the two heads of state and strengthen bilateral relations and strategic cooperation between China and the ROK. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership. China is willing to make joint efforts with the ROK to continuously give full play to the leading and guiding role of the meetings between the two heads of state, strengthen political communication, consolidate strategic mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and accelerate the docking of the "Belt and Road" cooperation, in a bid to promote bilateral relations for sound, stable and forward-looking development.

Yang Jiechi briefed Moon Jae-in on the situation of the recent visit of the top leader Kim Jong-un of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to China and stated that China has always adhered to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, maintained peace and stability on the Peninsula, and committed to resolving issues through dialogue and consultation. At present, the situation on the Peninsula is in an important period of ease and turnaround. All parties should seize the opportunity and make joint efforts to promote the summit between the leaders of the ROK and the DPRK as well as between the leaders of the DPRK and the United States for smooth holding and positive results, and restart the substantial and political settlement process of the Peninsula issue at an appropriate time. China is willing to make joint efforts with the ROK to realize the denuclearization, peace and stability of the Peninsula.

Moon Jae-in asked Yang Jiechi to convey his warm congratulations on President Xi Jinping's election as Chinese President and expressed that the ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership has maintained a sound momentum of development. Moon Jae-in expected bilateral relations to make greater progress in the new year. The ROK spoke positively of the important significance of China's successful reception of Kim Jong-un's visit to China and the holding of the meeting between leaders of China and the DPRK, highly appreciated China's constructive role in the Peninsula issue, and thanked China for its contributions to the recent ease of the situation on the Peninsula. The ROK is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China, and make joint efforts to safeguard the peace and stability of the Peninsula and promote the settlement of issues through dialogue and negotiation.

Previously, Yang Jiechi also held talks with National Security Advisor Chung Eui-yong of the ROK and met with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.
