Director-General of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of Chinese Foreign Ministry Chen Xiaodong Visits Benghazi

2011/07/07

On July 6, 2011, Chen Xiaodong, Director-General of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited Benghazi, Libya and met respectively with Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of the Libyan National Transitional Council Ali al-Isawi and the head of the Executive Board's foreign affairs office.

Chen said that China is deeply concerned about the more than four months of continuous crisis in Libya which has brought about huge sufferings to the Libyan people and exacerbated instability in the region. China believes the current situation should not continue and a political solution must be found as soon as possible. China appeals to both parties to the Libyan conflict to immediately start substantive negotiations on ceasing the conflict and future political arrangement in order to maintain the fundamental interest of the country and its people as well as regional peace and stability and to actively respond to the mediation efforts of the African Union (AU) and other related parties. China attaches importance to the role of the Libyan National Transitional Council, recognizes it as an "important dialogue partner" and expects to continue to keep contacts with the Council in order to seek the political solution to the Libyan crisis at an earlier date.

The officials of the National Transitional Council appreciate China's efforts of promoting the peaceful settlement of the Libyan crisis and believe political negotiations are the ultimate way out for the Libyan issue. They do not reject the proposals of the AU on solving the Libyan crisis. They are willing to strengthen relations with China and reiterate the promise of protecting the lives and safety of properties of Chinese citizens in areas under their control.
