Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on the Completion of the Operation in Waters to the South of China's Zhongjian Island

2014/07/16

Q: The information from China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL) shows that China's HYSY 981 drilling rig has completed its drilling and exploration operation in waters off the Zhongjian Island of the Xisha Islands on July 15. Please confirm that.

A: As the information from relevant Chinese companies shows, the operation of China's HYSY 981 drilling rig, which started on May 2 in waters off the Zhongjian Island of China's Xisha Islands, has completed successfully on July 15 as scheduled. Companies concerned will map out work plan for the next step based on analysis and assessment of the geological data that they have obtained.

It is worth pointing out that the Xisha Islands are integral parts of China. The operation by the Chinese company is located in indisputable coastal waters of the Xisha Islands, which falls well within China's sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction. The Chinese side firmly opposes Vietnam's unjustified disruptions against Chinese company's operation and has taken necessary measures to guarantee the security of the operation.
