Wang Yi: epidemic knows no borders and the international community should stay united in adversity

2014/09/26

On September 25, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, when addressing the UN High-Level Meeting on Response to Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak, said that the international community should take further actions to fight against the Ebola epidemic.

Wang Yi stated that having claimed over 2,900 lives, the Ebola virus has continued to wreck havoc.

Wang Yi pointed out that epidemic knows no borders, and Ebola is a common challenge for all countries around the world. All lives are equal. It is the mission of all mankind to defend the dignity of life. The situation of fighting against the Ebola epidemic is still grave, which cannot be handled by the affected countries on their own. Time is life. The international community should take further actions to build up confidence, stay united in adversity and adopt resolute measures to contain the epidemic.

It is important that we offer timely and needed help. All parties should send more medical workers, experts and protection equipment to the affected areas to help treat the infected, build up the capacity of epidemic testing and assist communities in disease prevention and control.

It is important that we form synergy. We should support the World Health Organization and the United Nations in continuing with their roles of mobilizing global resources to combat the epidemic. It is imperative to follow the WHO roadmap, and actively work with the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response. China will send people to join the UN mission.

It is important that we address both the "symptoms and root causes" of the outbreak. We need to both manage the crisis and remove the root causes of the epidemic. Efforts should be made to accelerate the research and development of vaccines and drugs. The international community should increase input in Africa to help Africa enhance its public health capacity and achieve even greater development. This is the fundamental answer to prevent future outbreaks.

Wang Yi stressed that so long as we stay united in mind and in action, we will win the battle against this epidemic outbreak.
