2014/12/03

On December 3, 2014, President Xi Jinping upon request held a telephone conversation with Donald Tusk, the new President of the European Council.

Tusk said that he thanks President Xi Jinping for sending him a congratulatory message upon his office assumption and accepting the request to hold the telephone conversation with him, which reflects the great importance President Xi Jinping attaches to the relationship between the European Union (EU) and China. He is willing to maintain the good working relationship with President Xi Jinping, and is expecting an early meeting with President Xi Jinping.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the EU are both vital forces in the world pattern and the China-EU relationship is very important. This spring, I visited the EU headquarters and decided with the then leader of the EU to jointly forge the four major partnerships for peace, growth, reform and civilization, charting the course for the development of China-EU relations. This consensus is now being effectively carried out. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between China and the EU. The China-EU relationship is now stepping into a new era linking the past and the future and featuring maturity, stability and vigorous development. I am willing to make joint efforts with you to keep the momentum of China-EU high-level exchanges and close communication in various fields, continue to promote the China-EU 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation for mutual benefits and win-win results, enhance communication and coordination on major international and regional issues to reflect the strategic importance of the China-EU relationship at the global level, and promote the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership for continuous, sound and stable development.

Tusk said that President Xi Jinping's successful visit to the EU headquarters laid the foundation for the development of the EU-China relationship. Enhancing the four major partnerships between the EU and China is of great significance to both sides and to the world at large. The EU is willing to take the opportunity of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the EU-China diplomatic relationship next year to strengthen political exchanges and expand practical cooperation in various fields with China, so as to jointly promote the development of the EU-China comprehensive strategic partnership.
