Xi Jinping Attends China-Japan Friendship Exchange Meeting and Delivers Important Speech

2015/05/23

On May 23, 2015, President Xi Jinping attended the China-Japan Friendship Exchange Meeting and delivered an important speech at the Great Hall of the People. President Xi Jinping stressed that both China and Japan should, in the spirit of taking history as a mirror and looking into the future and on the basis of the four political documents between China and Japan, jointly promote peaceful development, jointly boost friendship from generation to generation, and jointly create a good future for the development of both countries, so as to make contributions to peace in Asia and the world at large.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Japan are close neighbors connected by the same waters. Since over 2000 years ago, peace and friendship have been the main melody in the hearts of the two peoples. They have learned from each other, promoting their own development and also making important contributions to the progress of human civilization. Since recent times, due to the path of aggression and expansion taken by Japan, China and Japan experienced a painful history, which brought grave calamity to the Chinese people. The older generation of leadership of the two countries, with high level of political wisdom, made important political determinations and, after overcoming numerous difficulties, achieved the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations, established peaceful and friendly treaties, and opened a new era of the bilateral relations. A group of far-sighted people from China and Japan have been actively engaged in this undertaking and done a lot of work for it. History has proved that China-Japan friendly undertakings are conducive to both countries and their peoples as well as to Asia and the world at large, and are worthy for us to value more and elaborately maintain and continue to make unremitting efforts for.

Xi Jinping pointed out that "virtue is not left to stand alone, and he who practices it will have neighbors". As long as the Chinese and Japanese peoples keep sincere friendship and take virtue as their neighbors, friendship from generation to generation is bound to realize. China attaches great importance to the development of China-Japan relations. We are willing to work together with Japan to promote bilateral good-neighborly and friendly cooperation on the basis of the four political documents between the two countries.

Xi Jinping stressed that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression as well as the World Anti-fascist War. The crimes committed by the Japanese militarism in those years must not be concealed and the historical truth must not be distorted. Any attempt to distort and beautify the history of Japanese militaristic aggression will not be tolerated by the Chinese people or the people of other victimized Asian countries. It is believable that any Japanese people with a sense of justice and conscience will not tolerate it either. Past experience, if not forgotten, is a guide for the future. To remember history is meant to create the future; to never forget the war is meant to maintain peace. The Japanese people are also victims of that war. China and Japan should, in the spirit of taking history as a mirror and looking into the future, jointly promote peaceful development, jointly boost friendship from generation to generation, and jointly create a good future for the development of both countries, so as to make contributions to peace in Asia and the world at large.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China-Japan friendship is rooted among civilians, and the future of China-Japan relations is in the hands of the two peoples. The Chinese government supports non-governmental exchanges between the two countries, encourages people from all walks of life of the two countries, especially the younger generation, to actively engage in the development cause of China-Japan friendship, and expects that the youths from the two countries strengthen their belief in friendship, actively take actions, and continuously sow the seeds of friendship, so as to make China-Japan friendship grow into a big tree or even a luxuriant forest and to maintain the friendship between the two peoples from generation to generation.

Chairman of the General Affairs Committee of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Toshihiro Nikai of Japan said in his speech that the current Japan-China Friendship Exchange Meeting is very important and people from all walks of life of Japan have actively joined the meeting. He expressed appreciation for the importance and support attached by the Chinese government to the Meeting. President Xi Jinping's speech is very important and they should make enhanced efforts to promote the development of Japan-China relations. Japan-China friendship is rooted among civilians, so maintaining non-governmental and cultural exchanges between the two countries, especially enhancing mutual understanding and exchanges between the youths and teenagers of the two countries, is very important for maintaining long-term development of the bilateral relations. He hopes that both sides could strengthen exchanges and cooperation in these areas. They are willing to work together with China to make unremitting efforts for long-term development of the bilateral relations.

Prior to the Meeting, Xi Jinping took a group photo with Toshihiro Nikai and other Japanese representatives.

Vice Premier Wang Yang, State Councilor Yang Jiechi and others attended the above activities.

The current China-Japan Friendship Exchange Meeting is a grand event of non-governmental exchanges between China and Japan in recent years. Over 3,000 Japanese friendly personnel from political, economic, tourism, literature and arts, and other circles attended the Meeting. At the Meeting, people from all walks of life of China and Japan jointly released the Initiatives of the China-Japan Friendship Exchange Meeting, which calls for strengthening non-governmental exchanges and cooperation between the two countries and joining efforts to carry forward China-Japan friendship to future generations.
