Wang Yi: Tashkent Summit will Exert Important Influence on SCO Development

On May 24, 2016, after attending the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tashkent, Foreign Minister Wang Yi introduced achievements of the meeting to the press.

Wang Yi expressed that the summit marking the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the SCO will be convened in Tashkent next month. Under joint efforts of all sides, the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers this time has achieved a complete success and made good preparation for the summit. Foreign Ministers have signed 9 resolutions, adopted drafts of outcome documents for the summit, including the Tashkent Declaration, and issued press communiqué of the Council of Foreign Ministers. From the current preparation situation, we are fully confident that the Tashkent Summit next month will be a fruitful event and it will exert important and positive influence on the development of the SCO.

Wang Yi expressed that the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers also discussed cooperation in various fields of the SCO. We agreed to, taking the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the SCO as an opportunity, further carry forward and practice the "Shanghai Spirit", consolidate political mutual trust, promote connectivity, enhance security cooperation, integrate development strategies, promote trade and investment facilitation, and consolidate people-to-people and cultural bond, so as to realize common stability, development and prosperity of all member states.

Wang Yi pointed out that the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers achieved new results on membership enlargement of the SCO. The meeting deliberated and passed the memorandum of obligation on granting India and Pakistan SCO membership and submitted it to the Tashkent Summit for approval, which is a key step for the two countries in joining the SCO.
