Ministry of Foreign Affairs Holds Event Presenting Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

2016/05/27

On May 27, 2016, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) held the second event presenting Chinese provinces at the Lanting Hall of the Ministry, with the theme of "An Open China: Guangxi Embracing the World". Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a speech. Secretary of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regional Committee of the Communist Party of China Peng Qinghua made remarks, and Chairman of the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Chen Wu gave the presentation. Present at the event were more than 500 people including foreign envoys, representatives and senior diplomats in China from over 110 countries and international organizations as well as representatives from industrial and commercial sectors, experts, scholars and reporters.

Wang Yi said that one important mission of China's diplomacy is to serve domestic development, that is, in a more pragmatic sense, to help China's provinces to open up to foreign countries so that they can seek cooperation for mutual benefit. The MFA has created the new platform of "Presenting Chinese Provinces" and presented Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region at its inaugural event. Various agreements reached at the first event are under orderly implementation. Today is the Day of Guangxi. The MFA has set up the stage at the Lanting Hall for Guangxi's presentation.

Wang Yi said that through the platform of China-ASEAN Expo, Guangxi is striding toward the world. It has established close relations of mutually beneficial cooperation with Southeast Asian countries and reached out to every corner of the world, thus becoming an important window for China's southwestern border to the outside world. As an important birthplace of the maritime Silk Road in history, Guangxi is still an important starting point and an integral part of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road today. To the west, it can reach the world along the modern maritime Silk Road. To the south, it can achieve connectivity with countries in the Indochina Peninsula through cross-border railways and highways so as to build the China-Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor. To the north, it can reach the hinterland of the Eurasian continent and Europe through the land route that stretches across western China. As President Xi Jinping has proposed, "Guangxi should build an international corridor opening to the ASEAN region, create new strategic anchors for the opening-up and development of the southwest and mid-south regions of China, and form an important gateway connecting the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road." It is believed that Guangxi will be bound to take off in the new century with two robust wings-the "Belt and Road". Meanwhile, it will further strengthen cooperation within the region and with the world at large so as to make greater contribution to the common development and prosperity of all countries.

Peng Qinghua said in his address that as China's only province neighboring ASEAN's seas and lands, Guangxi is committed to combining the advanced technology, capital, talents, management from China and abroad with Guangxi's advantages in policies, recourses, location and labor force, and to becoming an important economic and commercial bond linking mid-south as well as southwest regions of China and ASEAN countries and countries outside the region, so as to push forward mutually beneficial cooperation and realize win-win development. Chen Wu introduced Guangxi's beauty, openness, vitality, business startup environment, healthy lifestyle and harmony. He welcomed both Chinese and foreign people from all walks of life to visit Guangxi for sightseeing, communication and cooperation.

Malaysian Ambassador to China Dato Zainuddin Bin Yahya and Viet Nam Ambassador to China Dang Minh Khoi successively made speeches to thank the MFA for holding the event. They praised Guangxi's achievement in promoting economic development and maintaining ecological harmony, spoke positively of Guangxi's practical and mutually beneficial cooperation with ASEAN countries in all fields, and were optimistic about Guangxi's active role in advancing the "Belt and Road" construction and expanding the level of opening-up. They expressed willingness to further deepen exchanges and cooperation with Guangxi.

Wang Yi, Peng Qinghua, Chen Wu and diplomatic envoys also visited the exhibition showcasing Guangxi's local features and had in-depth exchanges.

Before the event, the government of Guangxi Autonomous Region and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) jointly hosted the Chinese and Foreign Business Dialogue under the theme of "Sharing Advantages of Guangxi as a Land-sea Gateway, Jointly Building a Regional Market and a Regional Value Chain". Assistant Foreign Minister Li Huilai, Vice Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Zhang Xiaoqin and CCPIT Vice Chairman Lu Pengqi attended the dialogue.
