Wang Yi: China-Hungary Relations Have Created Many "Firsts", Fully Proving the High-level Mutual Trust and Friendship Between Both Countries

2016/11/30

On November 30, 2016, after their talks, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó of Hungary jointly met the press in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that Minister Péter Szijjártó and I just attended the opening ceremony of the 1st China-Hungary "Belt and Road" working group meeting and held fruitful talks. Although China and Hungary are far apart, bilateral relations are at the best level in history. That is because both sides always respect each other's choice of development path and social system, and always support each other's core interests and major concerns. On this basis, China and Hungary have established solid mutual trust and provided strong and sustainable impetus for bilateral cooperation. The all-round mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Hungary has brought tangible benefits to both countries as well as strongly boosted the development process of Hungary. For example, China has become Hungary's largest trading partner outside the EU, and Hungary has become China's largest investment destination in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Under the current background of sluggish world economy, China-Hungary trade has increased against the trend, not only illustrating the great potential in bilateral trade exchanges, but also demonstrating bilateral friendly relations. Without a high-level mutual trust, bilateral economic and trade relations are unable to reach such level. Therefore, we highly recognize the leading role played by Chinese and Hungarian leaders in the development of bilateral relations, fully appreciate the solid mutual trust established between both countries, and completely acknowledge the profound and friendly public opinion foundation between the two peoples.

Wang Yi expressed that with joint efforts of both sides, China-Hungary relations have created many "firsts". Hungary is the first European country that signed an inter-governmental cooperation document on jointly advancing the "Belt and Road" construction with China; the first country that established and launched a "Belt and Road" working group mechanism with China; the first CEE country where China established a RMB clearance bank; the first CEE country that issued RMB bonds; the first CEE country that set up an office of China National Tourism Administration as well as the first European country that established bilingual teaching of Hungarian and Chinese. These "firsts" fully prove the high level of China-Hungary relations.

Wang Yi noted that the "Belt and Road" initiative has received active participation and support from more than 100 countries and international organizations in the world. Now all we have to do is to earnestly implement the initiative through bilateral pragmatic cooperation between China and each other country, so as to make the "Belt and Road" initiative not only a common initiative and a common vision, but also visible and tangible results. The "Belt and Road" working group set up by both sides is a good platform for advancing the implementation of the "Belt and Road" construction. It is believed that today's meeting will achieve positive results, and we hope other countries will learn from this specific implementation mechanism in conducting cooperation with China regarding the "Belt and Road" initiative.
