On February 22, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano of Italy at request, who accompanied President Sergio Mattarella of Italy on his visit to China.
Wang Yi said that with joint efforts of both sides, China-Italy relations have maintained a healthy and stable development. The two countries have enjoyed solid political mutual trust and achieved fruitful results from cooperation in economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural engagement, law enforcement and police affairs. Under the current situation, it is of great significance for both sides to strengthen the stability of bilateral relations and jointly cope with the uncertainties in the international situation. China is willing to work with the Italian side to implement the important consensus reached by leaders of both countries and strengthen cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework to elevate pragmatic cooperation between both sides to new highs.
Angelino Alfano agreed with Foreign Minister Wang Yi's positive comments on bilateral relations, and said that the friendship between China and Italy has enjoyed a long-standing history. At present, bilateral relations maintain a sound development momentum. Italy firmly adheres to the one-China policy and is willing to deepen its traditional friendship with China, promote pragmatic cooperation, strengthen international coordination as well as unswervingly be a comprehensive strategic partner of China.
Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
