Yang Jiechi Meets with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

On September 12, 2017 local time, State Councilor Yang Jiechi, who transited through Washington D.C. of the US after his visit to Jamaica, met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the US State Department.

Yang Jiechi pointed out that maintaining the sound development momentum of China-US relations not only conforms to the common interests of both countries but also is the common wish of the international community. Under the personnel guidance of President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, bilateral relations have achieved important and positive progress recently. Both sides should earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, respect each other, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, focus on cooperation and handle differences, so as to ensure the sound and stable development of China-US relations.

Yang Jiechi expressed that at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, President Donald Trump will pay a state visit to China within this year. The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the US to promote the visit for positive outcomes. Both sides should enhance communication at high level and all levels, well hold bilateral mechanism dialogues, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and enlarge people-to-people and cultural and local exchanges. Both sides should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, properly handle differences in a constructive manner, and strengthen coordination and cooperation in major international and regional issues.

Rex Tillerson expressed that the country stands ready to work together with China to push forward the development of US-China relations. President Donald Trump eagerly looks forward to paying a state visit to China within this year and jointly making plans for the future development of bilateral relations with President Xi Jinping. The US is willing to, together with China, on the basis of the first China-US diplomatic and security dialogue as well as comprehensive economic dialogue, well host the first round of social and people-to-people and cultural dialogue, as well as law enforcement and cyber-security dialogue, deepen bilateral cooperation in various fields, strengthen communication and coordination in international and regional issues, and make sure President Donald Trump’s visit to China will achieve fruitful outcomes, so as to push forward US-China relations for further and in-depth development.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
