Chinese embassy in Dakar reopens

2006-01-16

The Chinese embassy in Dakar, capital of Senegal, reopened Friday after China and Senegal resumed ambassadorial diplomatic ties.

The offices in Dakar's Fann Residence were officially reopened in the presence of visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and his Senegalese counterpart Cheikh Tidiane Gadio, who unveiled the brand of the Chinese Embassy together.

"This is a new page in the relations between our two countries," said Li, who arrived Dakar on Thursday for an official visit.

Gadio congratulated on the reopening of the embassy on behalf of his government, saying that the resumption of Sino-Senegalese ties conforms to the tide of history and is in the interest of the two peoples.

"Senegal has gone down in history by renewing its diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China," he added.

The Senegalese government will strive to boost the development of ties with China, Gadio said.

China and Senegal resumed ambassadorial diplomatic ties in October 2005.

Senegal is the second leg of Li's six-nation Africa tour, which has taken him to Cape Verde. He will then visit Mali, Liberia, Nigeria and Libya.
