Premier Wen leaves for Uganda to continue African visit

2006-06-26

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao left Dar es Salaam on June 23 (Friday) for Kampala, capital of Uganda to continue his Africa tour.

Wen paid a 22-hour visit to Tanzania at the invitation of Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

Wen is the fourth Chinese premier to have visited Tanzania since the two countries forged diplomatic relations in 1964. The previous three visits by Chinese premiers were made in 1965, 1983 and 1997.

During his stay in Dar es Salaam, Wen held talks with Tanzanian President Kikwete, who went to the airport to see him off, and witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements.

Wen's entourage includes Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Commerce Minister Bo Xilai.

Tanzania is the penultimate leg of Wen's seven-country Africa tour, which already took the Chinese premier to Egypt, Ghana, the Republic of the Congo, Angola, South Africa and Tanzania. Wen is to wind up in Uganda his eight-day trip to Africa that started on June 17.
