Chinese ambassador highlights China-Egypt relations

2007-10-29

Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Sike on Sunday highlighted China-Egypt strategic cooperation as an example of the cooperation between developing countries.

Wu made the remarks at a press conference at the Chinese embassy in Cairo, recalling the implementation of the follow-up actions of Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

"China and Egypt have been bearing good relations in the political field with frequent high-level mutual visit exchanges in recent years. In November 2006, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak attended the Beijing Summit and paid his ninth visit to China, Egypt will host the fourth FOCAC ministerial meeting and Egyptian People's Assembly speaker Ahmed Fathi Sorour has just finished his visit to China," Wu noted.

In recent years, the Chinese government has paid more attention to the bilateral exchanges in the fields of economy, science, education and culture, the Chinese top diplomat noted, adding that the bilateral trade is expected to reach about 4 billion U.S. dollars this year from 3.19 billion dollars in 2006 and the number of Chinese enterprises in Egypt currently reaches 352 with the total investment of about 430 million dollars.

In the past year, China took great efforts to expand its aid to Egypt to fund a rural school and a Chinese school, establish an oversea processing zone in the Suez economic Zone, strengthen human resources training efforts and facilitated the use of Africa-China Development Fund.

Wu expressed his belief that the China-Africa strategic cooperation will be more productive and beneficial to the development of both countries and their people.
