On 23 February 2005, H.E. Mr. Wang Yongqiu, Ambassador of China to Nigeria, hosted a Seminar on Sino-Nigerian Relations for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. H.E. Mr. Adolphus Wabara, Senate President, and more than 30 Committee Chairmen of the Senate were present at the Seminar held in the Chinese Embassy.

H.E. Adolphus Wabara, Senate President

Ambassador Wang briefed Senators on the recent developments in China-Nigerian relations, particularly the fruitful cooperation between the two countries in trade, investment and technological fields. He showed with Senators his confidence in brighter prospects for such cooperation in the years ahead. On the Taiwan question, Wang disclosed attempts by "Taipei Trade Mission" to make "two Chinas" or "one China and one Taiwan" in Nigeria, and said this ran counter to the one China policy of the Nigerian Government. Ambassador Wang hoped that the Senate would continue to uphold one China policy.

Senate President, in his response, assured the Chinese host that both the Nigerian Government and the Senate adhered to one China policy. Committee Chairmen and Senators at the Seminar said that the discussion offered a better understanding of on-going cooperation between the two countries and that the Senate would do all it could to foster such a relationship.
