Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Marise Payne of Australia

On September 24, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at request with Foreign Minister Marise Payne of Australia on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Wang Yi expressed, we have noticed some positive remarks the Australian side has recently made on its policy towards China. Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in particular, has stated publicly that China is a partner rather than a threat, and stressed that the Australian side attaches great importance to China, and Australia-China comprehensive strategic partnership is crucial to Australia. Australia's relations with China are far more than just "a customer relationship," and such a clarification is quite necessary. The sound development of China-Australia relations totally serves the interests of both countries and is conducive to regional peace and stability. It is hoped that the Australian side will properly handle sensitive issues concerning China in a constructive manner, especially take a correct stance on issues concerning China's sovereignty, security, and development interests, and work together with the Chinese side to promote healthy and stable development of bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect.

Congratulating on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Marise Payne said that the Australian side welcomes China's development. China's rise over the past decades has not only lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese people out of poverty, but also contributed to the stability of the international system. The Australian side attaches importance to developing Australia-China comprehensive strategic partnership, and believes that there are far more opportunities than differences in bilateral relations. The Australian side hopes to strengthen communication with the Chinese side, enhance mutual understanding and trust, seek to expand cooperation, properly manage differences, and develop even closer relations.
