China Assuming the Rotating Presidency of UN Security Council in April

On April 1, Ambassador Wang Guangya assumed the post of one-month rotating presidency of the Security Council. China has once again become the rotating president of the Security Council after one year.

On April 4, Ambassador Wang Guangya held the first general consultations of the Council, and the program of work for this month was adopted. At the following news briefing, he reported to the media the working arrangements of the Council. Ambassador Wang emphasized that as a permanent member of the Council and the current rotating president, China will continue to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, act in the spirit of fairness, democracy and transparency, seek solutions to regional hotspots, and fulfill the noble commitments of maintaining world peace and security entrusted to the Council by the UN Charter. Many major medias were at the briefing and lots of questions were asked. Ambassador Wang gave his replies on Sudan, Iranian nuclear issue, election of next Secretary-General, UN management reform and other issues.

It is reported that this month the Council will review issues of Sudan, Ethiopia, Cote-d'Ivoire, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Middle East, Western Sahara, East Timor, DR Congo, Sierra Leone, and Haiti, as well as Iranian nuclear issue. In general, the Security Council will continue to focus on Africa and the Middle East.
