In commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of Deng Xiaoping, a grand ceremony was held on 18 August here at the headquarters of the United Nations to open a photo exhibition, sponsored by the Chinese Mission to the United Nations. Over 150 people were present at the opening ceremony, including UN Under-Secretaries-General Nobuyasu Abe, Shashi Tharoor, Chen Jian, Catherine Bertini and other UN officials, permanent representatives and diplomats from missions of Russia, Japan, Pakistan, Vietnam, the United Kingdoms, Germany, Italy, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, India and others, and Chinese and foreign reporters stationed at the United Nations.

Ambassador Zhang Yishan, Acting Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. In his speech, Ambassador Zhang recalled the indelible contributions made by Deng Xiaoping to China's liberation and modernization. He said that it is universally acclaimed that Deng Xiaoping is one of the most outstanding statesmen and diplomats in the world. Deng Xiaoping, as the head of the Chinese delegation to the sixth special session of the General Assembly in April 1974, expounded the theory of division of three worlds and the thought of establishing a new international economic order. By pointing out that peace and development were the two major issues facing the world, Deng Xiaoping profoundly delineated the major contradictions and problems existing in the world. His creative and great concept of "one country, two systems" led to the smooth return of Hong Kong and Macao to the motherland. His glorious accomplishments will forever be engraved in the memory of all ethnic nationalities of the Chinese people.

The exhibition will be held from 18 to 27 August. The photos selected have reflected 50 important episodes of Deng Xiaoping's life from his youth to his old age, crystallizing his arduous yet epic life devoted to the cause of revolution and capturing his magnificent images and his noble characters. And in particular, over 30 valuable photos showing his conducts as an outstanding diplomat have retold many historical occasions in the friendly contacts between China and other countries. All these have attracted deep interests from participants of the opening ceremony and brought back to them wonderful memories. Many guests, through their meetings and personal friendship with Deng Xiaoping, are well aware of his unique charm and magnificent character. They all acknowledge that Deng Xiaoping is undoubtedly a historical giant, not only the "father of reform" for China and a brilliant Chinese leader, but also an outstanding promoter for world peace, security and development.
