Chinese New Year Tea Party

On 27 January, Mrs. Cong Jun, wife of Chinese Permanent Representative Wang Guangya to the United Nations, was the hostess of a Chinese New Year tea party and charity sale for the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami disaster relief efforts. More than 90 guests joined the activity, including wife of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and wives of permanent representatives of UN Member States, as well as members of the women organizations within the UN system. Cong Jun made the welcoming speech, and introduced to them the relevant cultural background of the Chinese Lunar New Year. The guests showed great interest in the Chinese traditions and celebrations. They were attracted by the carving craft showed by the Chinese chef and the display of twelve symbolic animals. They also watched with fascination performances prepared by the woman diplomats and children of the mission and American Chinese performers. The joyous and festive gathering at the grand hall of the mission was permeated with tea fragrance and laughter.
