Security Council Decides to Send 3,500 More Peacekeepers to Haiti


On January 19, Ambassador Zhang Yesui, President of the Security Council and Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, made a press statement after the Council adopted the resolution on sending additional peacekeepers to Haiti.

Ambassador Zhang said that the Council had just met and unanimously adopted a resolution to send an additional 3,500 UN peacekeepers to Haiti to support the humanitarian assistance, stability and reconstruction efforts there. Of the 3,500 peacekeepers, 1,500 will be police officers, and 2,000 will be military personnel.

Ambassador Zhang said that sending additional peacekeepers to Haiti will help build the capacity of the United Nations to maintain stability, provide humanitarian assistance and engage in reconstruction efforts in Haiti.
