Wang Yi Meets with Acting Foreign Minister of the Afghan Interim Government Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi

On October 5, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Acting Foreign Minister of the Afghan Interim Government Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi on the sidelines of the 3rd China Xizang Trans-Himalaya Forum for International Cooperation.

Wang Yi said that China and Afghanistan are both countries in the trans-Himalaya region, linked by mountains and rivers in geography and having mutual connectivity in history. The two countries can further strengthen cooperation through the Forum to jointly promote ecological conservation, sustainable development and the improvement of people's livelihood. Afghanistan actively attended the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou by sending more than 100 Afghan athletes to the opening ceremony. This gained warm applause from the whole audience and demonstrated a good image of openness and inclusiveness.

Wang Yi emphasized that China always attaches importance to developing relations with Afghanistan, respects Afghanistan's national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and respects the Afghan people's independent choice. China never interferes in Afghanistan's internal affairs, does not seek any selfish gains in Afghanistan, sincerely hopes that the Afghan people can live in tranquility and happiness, and expects Afghanistan to play a more constructive role in international affairs. China will, as always, support Afghanistan in building a broad-based and inclusive government, exercising moderate and prudent governance, adhering to good neighborliness and friendship, and cracking hard down on terrorism. China stands ready to continue to help Afghanistan develop its relations with neighboring countries and be better integrated into regional economic cooperation through such channels as the coordination and cooperation mechanism with Afghanistan's neighboring countries. Wang Yi expressed his hope that Afghanistan will continue to take effective measures to crack hard down on terrorism, and thoroughly exterminate the terrorist forces of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement in Afghanistan.

Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi expressed his thanks to China for providing the Afghan athletes with support and help for their attending the Asian Games in China. Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi welcomed the newly-appointed ambassador of China to Afghanistan to assume the post and said that this is conducive to the further development of bilateral relations. Afghanistan attaches importance to its relations with China and hopes to actively participate in Belt and Road cooperation. Afghanistan has made great efforts to crack down on terrorism, sees security threats to China as challenges to Afghanistan, and does not allow any activities in Afghanistan to undermine China's security and stability. Afghanistan will also take concrete actions to safeguard the safety of the Chinese people in Afghanistan.
