On August 20, 2020, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division of the Ministry of External Affairs Naveen Srivastava of India co-chaired the 18th meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs via videolink. Representatives from both countries' departments related to diplomacy, national defense and immigration attended the meeting.
Both sides reviewed the recent situation in the border areas of the two countries, spoke positively of the progress of the disengagement of the front-line troops of both countries, exchanged candid and in-depth views of the outstanding issues on the ground, and enhanced mutual trust. Both sides agreed to earnestly implement the consensuses reached by the two Foreign Ministers and the two countries' special representatives on the boundary issue, continue to maintain dialogue and communication through military and diplomatic channels, further de-escalate tensions in the border region, properly deal with the outstanding issues on the ground, and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border region.
