Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong Holds Consultations with Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of the ROK Foreign Ministry Choi Youngsam

On July 4, 2023, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong held consultations with Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Choi Youngsam in Beijing. The two sides had candid and in-depth communication on China-ROK relations.

The two sides agreed that China and the ROK   are inseparable neighbors and partners for cooperation. It is of utmost importance to maintain the sound and stable development of bilateral relations, which serve the common interests of both sides. The two sides agreed to uphold the original aspiration when establishing diplomatic ties, look ahead to the future, move forward in the same direction, and work together to overcome current difficulties in the China-ROK relations and bring it back to the track of stable and sound development at an early date. Sun Weidong elaborated on China's position on Taiwan and other issues concerning China's core and major interests. He stressed that the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair, and urged the ROK side to abide by and practice the one-China principle, which bears on the political foundation of China-ROK relations. Choi Youngsam emphasized that the ROK has always respected the one-China principle since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the ROK and China, and will continue to uphold this position.

The two sides also exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula, regional cooperation and other issues of mutual interest and concern.

The two sides agreed that the consultations were constructive, and agreed to continue to strengthen political and diplomatic communication between the two countries.
