China and Kiribati

Friendly relations and cooperation between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kiribati have continued to grow since the diplomatic relationship was resumed in September 27, 2019.

In January 2020, Kiribati President Taneti Maamau paid a state visit to China. In June 2023, Speaker of Kiribati's House of Assembly Tangariki Reete visited China, and Chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee Zhao Leji held talks with him. In May 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Kiribati. 

Exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various areas developed steadily. In September 2024, the Confucius Institute of Kiribati was officially established. The Chinese medical teams have been offering free medical services in Kiribati since 2022. In July 2023, the Chinese naval hospital ship Peace Ark paid a visit to Kiribati and provided humanitarian medical services to the local people.
