China and Morocco

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Morocco on November 1, 1958, bilateral relations have maintained steady and sound development. In May 2016, King Mohammed VI of Morocco paid a state visit to China, during which the two countries established a strategic partnership.

The two sides have close high-level exchanges. In August 2020, President Xi Jinping had a phone call with King Mohammed VI of Morocco. In November 2024, President Xi Jinping made a technical stopover in Casablanca on his way back home from a state visit to Brazil on a special plane, and had a cordial conversation with Moroccan Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, who was there to greet him at the airport.

Visits from the Chinese side to Morocco mainly include: Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (December 2013), Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Yu Zhengsheng (November 2014), Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Arken Imirbaki (November 2018), Vice Chairperson of the NPC Standing Committee Cao Jianming (April 2019), Vice Chairperson of the CPPCC National Committee Leung Chun-ying (October 2019), and Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Zhao Leji (May 2023), among others. In addition, visits from the Moroccan side to China or to attend diplomatic activities in China include: King Mohammed VI (February 2002, May 2016), Head of government Aziz Akhannouch (September 2024), Speaker of the House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alami (May 2024), Speaker of the House of Councilors Hakim Benchamach (December 2017), and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita (November 2017, July 2018, April 2019, May 2024), among others.

For many years in a row, China has been Morocco's third largest trading partner in the world and the largest in Asia. In 2024, the total trade volume between China and Morocco is USD 9.04 billion, of which China's exports amounted to USD 7.74 billion and imports totaled USD 1.3 billion. China mainly exports textiles, apparel, electronic products, machinery and equipment, shoes, tea, and hardware, among others, and mainly imports electronic components, metal ore and other products.

The two countries have close people-to-people and cultural exchanges. China and Morocco signed an agreement on intergovernmental cultural cooperation in 1982. As of today, the two sides have signed 11 annual implementation plans for the agreement. In recent years, the two sides have jointly held cultural festivals, art festivals, concerts, symposiums, cultural and creative exhibitions and other colorful activities, which have been well received by the two peoples.

Morocco currently has three Confucius Institutes, located at Mohammed V University, Hassan II University of Casablanca and Abdelmalek Essaâdi University. In December 2018, the China Cultural Center in Rabat was officially inaugurated, which is the 36th cultural center established by China overseas.

Since 1975, China has sent medical teams to Morocco from Shanghai.

Since June 2016, Morocco has implemented a visa-free entry policy for Chinese citizens. In January 2025, Royal Air Maroc resumed direct flights between Casablanca and Beijing, and Shanghai Airlines, a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, opened direct flights between Shanghai and Casablanca.
