I. Political Relations
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Cabo Verde established diplomatic relations on April 25, 1976. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the relationship between the two countries has developed smoothly. In September 2024, China and Cabo Verde established strategic partnership.
In April 2024,H.E. Olavo Correia, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Business Development and Digital Economy of Cabo Verde, attended the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries. In September 2024, H.E. Prime Minister José Ulisses Correia e Silva, attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
II. Economic and Trade Relations and Economic-Technical Cooperation
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China has provided economic and technological assistance to Cabo Verde, assisting to construct projects such as the Parliament Building, National Library, and Barragem de Poilão. In 2009, China and Cabo Verde signed an agreement to establish Joint Economic and Trade Commission. In July 2010, the first meeting of the China Cabo Verde Joint Economic and Trade Commission was held in Beijing. In 2023, the trade volume between China and Cabo Verde reached 103 million USD, with a year-on-year increase of 15.2%.
III. Exchanges and Cooperation in Cultural, Educational and Other Fields
The two countries have a cultural cooperation agreement. China started to offer scholarships to students from Cabo Verde since 1996. There are approximately 180 Cabo Verdern students studying in China in 2023. In 2015, a Confucius Institute was established at the University of Cabo Verde. In 2017, the Ministry of Education of Cabo Verde signed a cooperation agreement with the Confucius Institute at the University of Cabo Verde to carry out Chinese language education in secondary schools in Cabo Verde.
Chinese medical teams to Cabo Verde have been working in the capital city of Praia since 1984.
