Jiang Zemin, President of the People's Republic of China, at the invitation of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, paid a state visit to Ukraine from July 20 to23, 2001.
During his visit, President Jiang held meetings and talks with Ukrainen President Leonid Kuchma, the Chairman of Supreme Council of Ukraine Plyushch and Prime Minister Anatoliy Kinakh. The leaders of the two countries, in sincere, amiable and friendly atmosphere, exchanged views on strengthening the bilateral relations and international issues of common concern in an in-depth manner, and reached extensive consensus.
Both sides agreed the bilateral relations between China and Ukraine have broad prospects in the 21st century. The People's Republic of China and Ukraine will further promote the traditional friendship between the two peoples, expand all-round cooperation so as to bring benefit to the two countries and the two peoples.

Both reaffirm to abide by the Joint Communiqué on Establishing Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and Ukraine, issued on January 4th, 1992, the Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and Ukraine on September 6th, 1994 and all fundamental principles confirmed in the Statement on Developing and Deepening the Friendly Relations of Cooperation between China and Ukraine on December 4, 1995.
Both sides will contribute to developing bilateral relations at a higher level.
The two sides highly praise the fruitful results of the state visit by President Jiang Zemin of the People's Republic of China to Ukraine, considering this visit will inject fresh vitality into the smooth development of the Sino-Ukraine relations in the 21st century.
Both point out the deepening of the bilaterally all-round friendly relations of cooperation, based on mutual respect, non-interference in each others' internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, conduce to the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples.
Ukraine reaffirms its ground on Taiwan stated in a series of state documents between China and Ukraine, recognize there is but one China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government of the whole China. In view of the facts that Taiwan is the integral part of China's territory, Ukraine will not establish official relations in whatever form with Taiwan.
China recognizes and respects Ukrainian independence, sovereignty and territory integrity, reiterates its commitment of guaranteeing nuclear safety to Ukraine in 1994.
In economic fields:
Both sides emphasize on the development of cooperation of mutual benefit covering all the fields between China and Ukraine, highly evaluate the work by the economy-trade, science- technology and peaceful exploration space committee between two governments.
Both will, according to the principles of market economy, adopt measures to improve the coordinating mechanism for commercial cooperation, continually enrich and optimize trade structure, increase trade volume and start cooperation in high-tech field, thus promoting cooperation in concrete fields.
Both will encourage and support institutions and enterprises of China and Ukraine to participate in establishing the large-scale infrastructure and energy project between China, Ukraine and a third country.
Both will hold various commerce-trade meetings and exhibitions with the assistance from China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Ukrainian Entrepreneurs' Alliance and Associations of Industry and Commerce and other institutions between the two countries.
In the field of international affairs:
Both sides believe firmly that the current international order should be established on the basis that each country has the right to choose its own way of development. Multi-polarization conduces to the democratization of international relations, and peace and stability of the whole world.
Both sides reaffirm that they share the same or similar views and stance on current major international and regional issues, and are willing to strengthen cooperation in the United Nations and other international organizations.
Both are fully confident that the United Nations is the world most universal and authoritative international organization made up of sovereign states, is the assurance of international peace and security and plays the leading role in promoting common development and prosperity.
Both regard that the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty sign in 1972 of profound significance for global strategic stability and international security, is the basis for the framework of international agreements on reduction and limitation of offensive strategic weapons.
President Jiang Zemin expressed thanks for the warm reception of Ukraine and invited the President of Ukraine Kuchma to pay a state visit to China. President Kuchma was pleased to accept the invitation. The specific date will be decided through diplomatic channel.
