On December 10th, 2021, representative of the government of the Republic of Nicaragua Laureano Ortega visited China and signed with Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu the Joint Communiqué on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Nicaragua in Tianjin, and diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level between the two countries officially resumed. In December, letters were exchanged between President Xi Jinping and President Daniel Ortega Saavedra, and between State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Denis Moncada. On the day China-Nicaragua diplomatic ties resumed, the two foreign ministers held a virtual meeting.
In December 2023, China and Nicaragua announced an upgrade in the bilateral relationship to strategic partnership.
