China and Brazil

In 2021, the comprehensive strategic partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Federative Republic of Brazil continued its steady progress.

High-level exchanges maintained good momentum. President Xi Jinping and President Jair Messias Bolsonaro exchanged letters multiple times to share views on bilateral relations, among other topics. In March, NPC Chairman Li Zhanshu held talks online with Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Brazilian National Congress Arthur Lira. In November, Vice President Hamilton Mourão attended and addressed the High-level Session on the 20th Anniversary of China's Accession to the WTO online. In April and October, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation and an online meeting with Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos França.

The two countries made steady advances in practical cooperation. Bilateral trade in 2021 reached US$164.1 billion, up by 36.2% year on year. China stood as Brazil's largest trading partner for 13 years running. Brazil is China's largest trading partner and biggest investment destination in the Latin American region. Major cooperation projects such as the Ponte Salvador-Itaparica moved forward despite the impact of COVID. Cooperation in electricity, new energy, automobile and port logistics made good progress.

The two countries achieved notable results in their joint fight against COVID and carried out cooperation in the research and development of COVID vaccines and  medicines. In August, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi chaired the first meeting of the International Forum on COVID Vaccine Cooperation, and Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos França attended the meeting online.

The two countries maintained good communication and coordination in international organizations and multilateral institutions including the UN, the G20, and BRICS. Brazil supported China in hosting the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Exchanges and cooperation were carried out between the two countries' political parties and in technology and people-to-people areas. Major political parties in Brazil sent congratulatory messages to the CPC Central Committee on the  its  centenary,     attended the CPC and World Political Parties Forum and the  third China-CELAC Political Parties Forum.  Cultural events such as  “Happy Spring Festival",  online exhibitions and showing of Chinese films were held successfully.
