China and Chile

In 2021, the comprehensive strategic partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Chile registered sound and steady growth.

The two countries promoted friendly exchanges and continued to consolidate political mutual trust. In April, President Sebastián Piñera addressed the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2021 via video 1ink. In September, President Piñera addressed the 18th Western China International Fair via video link. In October, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand. In August, the two sides held the 13th meeting of the Political Dialogue Committee between the Chinese National People's Congress and the Chilean Parliament.

The two countries carried out fruitful cooperation against COVID. China and Chile worked closely in the research, development and application of COVID vaccines. In August, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the first meeting of the International Forum on COVID Vaccine Cooperation, and Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand attended the Forum.

The two countries made steady progress in practical cooperation. Under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Chile enjoyed productive cooperation in trade, customs inspection and quarantine, investment and financing, infrastructure, and at the subnational level. China remained Chile's largest trading partner, top export destination and biggest source of import. Bilateral trade in 2021 stood at US$ 65.8 billion, a 45.4 percent growth compared to the previous year. In June, Foreign Minister Allamand attended the Asia and Pacific High-level Conference on Belt and Road Cooperation. In October, the arrangement for mutual recognition of authorized economic operator(AEO) status between China and Chile went into effect. In November, the two countries signed the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Frozen Fruit from the Republic of Chile to the People's Republic of China between the General Administration of Customs of the People 's Republic of China and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Chile. In July, Chile's consulate general in Chengdu opened.  

The two countries engaged in vibrant people-to-people exchanges. Signature cultural events such as “Happy Spring Festival” and “Chinese Lantern Festival” were held successfully in Chile.

China and Chile maintained good communication in the UN, APEC and the China-CELAC Forum, among other international organizations and multilateral institutions. In December, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the third Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, and Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand attended the Forum. 

In June, China's new ambassador to Chile Niu Qingbao presented his credentials to President Sebastián Piñera.
