In 2021, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Colombia made marked progress in their friendly and cooperative relations.
High-level exchanges presented several highlights. In February, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with President Iván Duque Márquez. In March, President Xi delivered a video speech to the Colombian people as Chinese vaccines arrived in Colombia. In June, President Duque attended online the Asia and Pacific High-level Conference on Belt and Road Cooperation. President Duque recorded a congratulatory video message on the CPC’s100th anniversary.
Practical cooperation made steady progress. China remained Colombia's second largest trading partner and second largest export destination. Colombian companies took an active part in the fourth China International Import Expo. Colombia's export of products to China other than energy and minerals, such as avocado and coffee, grew notably. The two countries engaged in active cooperation against COVID. China exported vaccines to Colombia on a continuous basis, and the two countries explored the possibility of building a vaccine plant in Colombia to help accelerate its vaccination program.
People-to-people and subnational exchanges and cooperation continued to thrive. In innovative formats, China held in Colombia signature cultural events, including the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese proficiency competition, the“China Culture Week”and “Dialogue". New cultural programs were introduced, such as the“China in the Eyes of Colombia" short video competition.
