In 2021, the comprehensive strategic partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Ecuador continued to deepen.
The two countries enjoyed frequent high-level interactions. In April, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to President-elect Guillermo Lasso. In May, Chinese ambassador to Ecuador attended the presidential inaugural ceremony as Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping. In June, President Guillermo Lasso sent a congratulatory letter to General Secretary Xi Jinping on the centenary of the CPC. In August, President Xi and President Lasso spoke on the phone, reaching important common understanding on bilateral relations and cooperation in various fields. The two countries maintained good communication and collaboration on major international and regional issues.
Practical cooperation advanced steadily. Trade volume between the two countries grew despite difficulties. China became the second largest export destination for Ecuadorian non-oil products. The China-aided post-disaster reconstruction projects in Ecuador were well underway. Hydropower plants undertaken by Chinese companies such as the Sopladora Hydropower Plant were handed over to Ecuador. China continued to export and donate vaccines to Ecuador, and Ecuador thanked China publicly on multiple occasions for supporting its COVID response.
Friendship between the two peoples kept deepening. China announced 300 government scholarships for Ecuador from 2021 to 2025. Ecuadorian children's author Veronica Bonilla received the 15th Special Book Award of China. Guizhou Province and Meishan City signed MOUs on sister province/city exchanges and cooperation respectively with Ecuador's Pichincha Province and Latacunga City.
