In 2021, the friendly relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana maintained steady development.
Political mutual trust between the two countries was further consolidated. In March, President Xi Jinping and President Mohamed Irfaan Ali spoke on the phone, reaching important common understanding on bilateral relations and anti-COVID cooperation. Leaders of major political parties in Guyana, including the People’s Progressive Party, the People’s National Congress and the Alliance for Change, expressed congratulations on the centenary of the CPC. In May, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee Song Tao had a video call with Vice President of Guyana and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Bharat Jagdeo. In October, Minister of Public Works Juan Anthony Edghill attended via video link the second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference held by China. In December, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the third Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd attended the meeting via video link. China and Guyana maintained close communication and collaboration in international affairs.
Practical cooperation in various fields advanced steadily. China provided anti-COVID supplies to Guyana via multiple channels. Guyana was the first country in the Caribbean region to receive vaccine assistance from China. In March, vaccines provided by China arrived in Georgetown, and President Mohamed Irfaan Ali sent a letter of appreciation to President Xi Jinping. The Cheddi Jagan International Airport expansion project was well underway.
The friendship between the two peoples continued to deepen. The 16th Chinese medical team to Guyana successfully held the first China-Guyana Cultural Exchange Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and completed mission rotation with the 17th medical team. China continued to provide government scholarships and online training opportunities to Guyana.
In October, China’s new ambassador to Guyana Guo Haiyan presented her credentials to President Ali.
