On February 21, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong at the latter's request in Johannesburg.
Wang Yi said that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Australia relations have stabilized, which has been welcomed by all sectors of both countries. The return of bilateral relations to the track of sound and stable development serves the common interests of both sides and conforms to the shared aspirations of the two peoples. China is ready to work with Australia to build a more mature, stable and fruitful China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership. China appreciates Australia's repeated commitment to the one-China principle, and hopes that Australia will continue to respect China's core interests and major concerns, safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations, and properly manage differences. In the face of the current complex and volatile international situation, China holds that all countries should practice true multilateralism, and major countries, in particular, should demonstrate exemplary responsibility in firmly opposing "turning back the wheel of history" and returning to the "law of the jungle". China is ready to work with Australia and other members of the international community to defend the victorious outcomes of World War II and uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core.
Penny Wong said that at present, China and Australia have made positive strides in various areas of interaction, with economic and trade exchanges fully recovered, sending positive signals. The Australian side firmly pursues the one-China policy and is ready to continue to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side in areas that serve their respective national interests, uphold the international rule of law and strategic security, and jointly address global challenges.
