Ambassador He Rulong Visits Akureyri in Northern Iceland

On June 24, Ambassador He Rulong visited Akureyri, the biggest city in Northern Iceland, and met with Chairman of Akureyri City Council Heimir Árnason, Mayor of Akureyri Ásthildur Sturludóttir, and Rector of the University of Akureyri (UNAK) Eyjólfur Guðmundsson.

Ambassador He congratulated the success of the latest municipal election in Akureyri, and said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to regional cooperation, believing that regional cooperation plays an important role in the friendship and cooperation between China and Iceland. The Embassy is willing to help build a bridge between the Chinese local government and Akureyri, with a view to further promoting the cooperation in the fields of trade, tourism, education and the Arctic.

Chairman Árnason and Mayor Sturludóttir warmly welcomed Ambassador He and introduced the current situation of Akureyri in detail, expressing that Akureyri is willing to maintain close contact with the Embassy and push forward the exchanges and cooperation through multiple channels, so as to make more positive contributions to China-Iceland friendship and cooperation at local level.

When visiting the Rector of UNAK, Ambassador He said that China has maintained a long-term and sound relationship with UNAK. China welcomes UNAK to further advance the exchanges in education and push forward the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Iceland. Rector Guðmundsson mentioned that in recent years UNAK has enjoyed close cooperation with Chinese universities and other institutions with fruitful results, and he is willing to further expand academic exchanges and work even harder to promote China-Iceland friendship.
