On 22 June, during his visit to the University of Glasgow, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang met with the representatives of Chinese students at the University and held talks with them.

Ambassador Zheng began with warm greetings on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in the UK and Consulate-Generals in Edinburgh to the Chinese students at the University of Glasgow and in Scotland. He spoke highly of the strong spirit of Chinese students studying in the UK during the pandemic, who have overcome difficulties, stayed committed to their original aspiration and persevered in their studies. He also commended the great work of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association UK and the associations of various schools in helping each other and serving overseas students during the pandemic.

Ambassador Zheng talked to the students about China’s current development situation, stressing that China adheres to the “dynamic zero” policy, which has effectively protected the lives and health of over 1.4 billion Chinese people. China is also taking important measures to promote comprehensive and orderly resumption of work and production, making every effort to achieve the important targets for economic and social development this year.

Ambassador Zheng pointed out that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and the UK. China is willing to work with the British side on the basis of mutual respect, openness and inclusiveness to promote the sustainable, healthy and stable development of China-UK relations. The mutual understanding and fondness between Chinese and British people serves as a solid foundation for the friendship between the two countries, and every Chinese student in the UK is a walking name card of China. He hoped that the students will showcase with concrete actions the vigorous image of contemporary Chinese youth and the pride, confidence, and assurance as a Chinese. They could also become good promoters of both Chinese culture and China-UK friendship.

Ambassador Zheng expressed his hope that the students would keep in mind President Xi Jinping's ardent expectation and message to the youth of today, love the Party and the country and develop the country with the knowledge and skills they learned. They should also work hard, aim high, unite with and help each other in pursuit of common progress, and achieve success in their studies. Ambassador Zheng also reminded the students to stay healthy and safe, saying that the Embassy and Consulates will always be their home and will continue to provide them with assistance and support.

The students shared their stories of continuing their studies and working hard during the pandemic, and talked about their campus life and experience of studying abroad.

Chinese Consul General to Edinburgh Ma Qiang, Counsellor Hua Mei, wife of Ambassador Zheng, Minister Counsellor Zhang Jin, Minister Counsellor Zeng Rong and Counsellor Zhang Limin of the Chinese Embassy in the UK were at the meeting.
