On 28 June 2022, the Chinese Ambassador to Belgium Mr. Cao Zhongming visited West Flanders and met with Governor Carl Decaluwé. The two sides exchanged views on subnational cooperation between relevant Chinese cities and provinces and West Flanders, as well as other topics of mutual interest. Vice Governor Jean de Bethune, representatives from the business and education sectors and Counsellor Deng Yonghui were also present.

Ambassador Cao noted that subnational cooperation promotes people-to-people connectivity and is thus an important pillar for the sound and steady development of bilateral relations. He expressed the hope that different sectors in West Flanders will stay confident in cooperating with China, pursue mutual benefits, encourage and promote two-way investment and fully unleash the great cooperation potential between the two sides. Ambassador Cao also took questions on China’s COVID policy, China-Belgium economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Governor Decaluwé reviewed the 22-year fruitful cooperation between West Flanders and China’s Zhejiang Province since the establishment of friendly relations and expressed the readiness to further boost subnational cooperation between China and Belgium, expand cooperation in new areas such as green economy, circular economy and healthcare services, and make greater contribution to the development of bilateral relations.
