Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong Pays a Courtesy Call on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena

On May 30, 2023, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, who attended the 12th round of diplomatic consultation between China and Sri Lanka, paid a courtesy call on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Colombo.

Sun Weidong conveyed cordial greetings from Premier Li Qiang to Gunawardena, saying that China and Sri Lanka are good neighbors, good partners and good friends. The two countries have always helped each other in times of difficulty. China relates deeply to Sri Lanka’s temporary difficulties and has and will continue to provide assistance within its capacity.

Sun Weidong said China’s economy is moving toward high-quality development and will continue to be an important driver of global economic growth. China is ready to enhance exchanges of governance experience with Sri Lanka, jointly engage in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, advance the comprehensive development projects of Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port, expand exchanges and cooperation in agriculture, education, religion and other fields, and strengthen solidarity and coordination in international affairs.

Gunawardena asked Sun Weidong to convey his greetings to Premier Li Qiang. He spoke highly of China’s development achievements, especially its comprehensive poverty alleviation, and expressed his willingness to learn from China’s successful experience. Gunawardena said that Sri Lanka has always adhered to the one-China principle, thanked China for helping the country when it encountered difficulties, and looked forward to upgrading economic and trade cooperation with China, deepening cooperation in industry, agriculture, energy and other fields, so as to enhance the country’s economic resilience and self-development capacity. Sri Lanka appreciates China’s efforts to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries on multilateral occasions, promote the settlement of regional hotspot issues and advance world peace and stability.

On the afternoon of the same day, Sun Weidong held a discussion with the Sri Lanka-China Parliamentary Friendship Association, exchanging in-depth views on China's development achievements, China-Sri Lanka relations and governance experience.
