Yang Jiechi Meets with Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the United Nations (UN) Security Council Reform of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly

On January 21, 2020, Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, met in Beijing with Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations (UN), and Joanna Wronecka, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN, co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the UN Security Council Reform of the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Yang Jiechi said, the aim of the UN Security Council reform is to strengthen its authority and efficacy, increase the representation and say of developing countries and small and medium-sized countries and reflect the trend of democratization of international relations and multipolarization. The Chinese side will actively support the two co-chairs to ensure that the reform conforms to the UN Charters and the common interests of the vast number of member states.

Lana Nusseibeh and Joanna Wronecka expressed, we attach importance to the Chinese side’s position on and role in the UN Security Council reform, and are willing to maintain the momentum of dialogue among various parties.
