Spokesperson on the rejection of the recommendations of the Management on the Qinghai Component of the China Western Poverty Reduction Project

2000-11-15 14:15
Q: The shareholders from developed members of the World Bank have rejected the recommendations of the Management of the World Bank on the Qinghai Component of the China Western Poverty Reduction Project. What is your comment on that?

A: The Qinghai Poverty Reduction Project is aimed at helping the people of various ethnic groups in the project region get rid of poverty and raise the economic and social development level of the affected region. It fully conforms to the policy and the Articles of Agreement of the World Bank and has been welcomed by the people in the region.

Unfortunately, the project failed approval because some developed countries, especially the United States and Japan, raised unreasonable demands and erected all sorts of obstacles for political reasons in violation of the Articles of Agreement of the World Bank.

China strongly opposes politicizing the activities of the World Bank. Any attempt to obstruct the implementation of the project is doomed to failure. In order to help the people of all ethnic groups in the project region shake off poverty as early as possible, the Chinese Government has decided to use its own fund to implement the Qinghai Poverty Reduction project in its own way. The determination of the Chinese Government to speed up its poverty reduction efforts will never waive.
