Q: What is your expectation of the first ministerial meeting of the East Asian- Latin American Forum? What is the subject of the meeting?

A: The first ministerial meeting of the East Asian-Latin American Forum will be held in Santiago, capital of Chile from March 29th to 30th, 2001. Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan will lead a delegation to attend the Forum. The Forum will review and adopt the framework document of the East Asian- Latin American Forum, exchange views on the situation in East Asia and Latin America as well as promoting the relations and cooperation between the two regions and discuss the development orientation of the forum.
East Asia and Latin America are two important regions in the world with rapid development and favorable conditions and potentials for cross-regional cooperation. The founding of the East Asia-Latin American Forum is conducive to strengthening the exchange and cooperation between the two regions, enhancing trust, increasing the overall competitive capacity of all countries and the two regions and promoting common development. We hope that the countries in the regions will, in the first ministerial meeting of the forum, exchange views on promoting the exchange and cooperation between the two regions and further make clear the development orientation of the forum and jointly push for the continuous development of the Forum.
China has always attached importance to the Forum and actively supported its development. From now on China will continue to make concerted efforts with all the other members of the Forum to work for development of the Forum step by step into a place for enhancing dialogue and cooperation between the two regions in all fields.
