Spokesperson on a communiqué issued by the just-concluded G8 Summit in support of dispatching international observers to the conflict areas between Israel and Palestine

2001-07-24 16:19
Q: The just-concluded G8 Summit issued a communiqué in support of dispatching international observers to the conflict areas between Israel and Palestine. What is the comment of the Chinese side?

A: We have taken note that the statement of the G8 Summit expressed support for the sending of international observers to the conflict areas between Israel and Palestine. China expresses its welcome and support. Since the outbreak of conflicts between Israel and Palestine, China has all along been in favor of sending international observers to the region and voted twice for the relevant draft resolutions during their deliberations at the UN Security Council. We believe that dispatching international observers to the conflict areas between Israel and Palestine will help monitor the effective implementation of the cease-fire agreement by the Israeli and Palestinian sides, facilitate the building of mutual trust and easing of the tension between the two parties. It is our hope that the Israeli and Palestinian sides will actively support the efforts of the international community so as to create appropriate conditions for the early resumption of peace talks.
