Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng Attends the Launching Ceremony of China-Pacific Island Countries Reserve of Emergency Supplies

On December 3, 2021, the China-Pacific Island Countries Reserve of Emergency Supplies was officially put into use in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng, Vice Chairlady of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial People's Congress Luo Juan, and envoys of Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to China attended the launching ceremony.

Xie Feng said in his speech that China and the Pacific Island Countries are sincere and mutually respected friends, good partners for common development and mutually beneficial and win-win results, good brothers that understand and learn from each other, and set an example of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between countries in different regions, of different sizes and political systems. Since this year, President Xi Jinping proposed in his phone conversations with leaders of the Pacific Island Countries that China would set up a China-Pacific Island Countries Reserve of Emergency Supplies. On October 21 this year, the First China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting successfully held via video link announced the launch of the program to set up a reserve of emergency supplies. By helping our friends, we help ourselves. The Reserve of Emergency Supplies, proposed and established by China, is an approach to building a long-term platform to help the Island Countries improve their capacity of coping with severe public health events and natural disasters, making greater contributions to better protecting their people's life and health, so as to build a closer China-Pacific Island Countries community with a shared future.

Luo Juan said in her address that, in recent years, Guangdong Province keeps intensifying cooperation and holistically enhancing exchanges at all levels and in all fields with the Pacific Island Countries. When the Island Countries were caught in natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, both sides have always stood together with mutual support, seeing bilateral mutual trust and friendship deepening continuously. Guangdong Province will earnestly implement President Xi Jinping's initiative and deployment, and take the inauguration of the Reserve of Emergency Supplies as an opportunity to further strengthen the multi-level and multi-field exchanges and cooperation with the Island Countries, so as to make greater contributions to the China-Pacific Island Countries community with a shared future.

Samoan Ambassador to China Tapusalaia Terry Toomata, in his address on behalf of the envoys of Pacific Island Countries, extended sincere appreciation for China's assistance in providing considerable medical supplies and vaccines in the fight against the pandemic, saying that the Reserve of Emergency Supplies is an active response from China to the Island Countries' demand for assistance in tackling climate change, natural disasters and the current pandemic, which will further advance close relationship and friendship between the two sides. Envoys of the Island Countries spoke highly of the relationship between China and the Island Countries, extended warm welcomes to the inauguration of the Reserve of Emergency Supplies, and expected to enhance friendly exchanges and practical cooperation with Guangdong Province in all areas, so as to continuously elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership between the Island Countries and China to new levels.
